Why Your Brain Needs More Moments of Presence

When was the last time you truly noticed the warmth of your cup of tea, the delicate aroma rising from it, or the birds singing outside your window?

So often, our minds are somewhere else. Replaying yesterday’s worries. Planning tomorrow’s to-do list. Solving problems that haven’t even happened yet.

Our brains are wonderfully designed to anticipate and protect us, but when they spend too much time scanning for problems, it’s easy to become caught in cycles of stress, overwhelm and anxiety.

One of the simplest and most powerful ways to interrupt that cycle is through mindful sensory experiences.

When we intentionally slow down and bring our full attention to what we can see, hear, smell, taste and feel, we gently encourage the brain to move out of “survival mode” and into a state of safety and restoration.

Modern neuroscience tells us that moments of calm presence help reduce the activity of our threat response while supporting the release of the brain’s natural “feel-good” chemicals. As our attention settles into the present moment, our nervous system begins to regulate, our breathing slows, our muscles soften and we create the conditions for greater emotional balance, creativity and resilience.

The beauty is that these moments don’t need to be extraordinary.

🌿The warmth of a teacup between your hands.

🌿The fragrance of fresh tea leaves.

🌿The crunch of a biscuit.

🌿The sound of birdsong.

🌿The softness of a blanket.

🌿The laughter of a friend.

When we fully experience these small moments, we’re giving our brains exactly what they need—a chance to pause, recover and recharge.

This is something I’m becoming increasingly passionate about exploring, because true wellbeing isn’t always about adding more to our lives. Often, it’s about noticing more of what’s already here.

That’s why I’m so excited to be hosting Tea, Talk & Tranquillity with Marta at Tea Veranda in Clevedon.

This luxury Friday evening wellbeing experience has been thoughtfully designed to help you gently leave the working week behind and ease into your weekend feeling calmer, lighter and more connected.

Together we’ll enjoy:

🫖A guided Sri Lankan tea tasting experience featuring beautiful loose-leaf teas, delicious cake and macarons, all served in beautiful china, with plenty of opportunity to savour each mindful moment.

🫖An accessible and engaging talk exploring the fascinating neuroscience of relaxation, rest and how slowing down supports your brain, nervous system and emotional wellbeing.

🫖A deeply restorative guided hypnosis-style relaxation to help you unwind completely.

You are welcome to remain comfortably seated throughout the relaxation or, if you prefer, bring a yoga mat, blanket and small pillow and enjoy the experience lying down.
