What is Hypnosis, and is it safe?

Hypnosis is the bringing together of the conscious and subconscious minds in a trance state. It is a safe, powerful technique creating a deeply relaxed state of the body, mind and emotions. It is also a perfectly natural state that we are often in during our everyday lives i.e whilst reading a book, watching television, or doing repeated tasks. Have you ever driven a familiar route in your car and arrived at your destination and can’t remember the journey? That is self-hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy is different from other therapies in that it is drug free. There is no physical manipulation and the conscious mind, with its anxious or analytical thoughts, is bypassed. It is the conscious mind which can often hinder the success of other forms of psychological work such as counselling or psychotherapy. Hypnosis or ‘trance’ is a very natural, relaxing state, encouraged by using guided relaxation, where the mind can relax and then focus on thoughts and suggestions that might be useful.


It is a complete misconception that hypnosis makes you say or do things against your will. During our sessions, you will be in control the whole time. During hypnotherapy, the client is guided by me into a relaxed, trance-like state in order for the unconscious mind to be accessed. My role as your therapist is to help you to access your subconscious mind to bring about the wanted change, within a code of ethics and confidentiality.

How I work

Hypnotherapy sessions take place either on Zoom, and for simplicity and efficiency I use the Calendly online booking system. This means you can immediately see my availability, and confirm the time slot that works for you in just a few clicks.

OR, for those local in North Somerset, I do offer face to face appointments held at ‘Your Body Business, 57 High Street, Yatton, by appointment and arrangement in advance with myself.

After our preliminary conversation or 20 minute Discovery Call, clients will need to book in for a paid Initial Consultation (for information and data gathering) before therapeutic sessions can begin. This session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. The Initial Consultation also includes an online presentation: 'Understanding your brain and workings of your mind'. Here, you will be given an overview and introduction to the workings of the brain, helping you to understand how sometimes we can feel like areas of our life are out of our control.


From then on, one hour Therapeutic Hypnotherapy Sessions are booked on a ‘pay upfront as you go’ basis, again using Calendly or via email. You will also be supplied with a relaxation MP3 file which you will be encouraged to use each night before bed to aid sleep and support our work together. Most therapy can be completed between 8-10 sessions as a guide but this varies from client to client. (8 sessions BLOCK BOOKINGS are available for £40 saving overall.)

What to expect during a Hypnotherapy session

Using the tool of hypnosis, you'll be guided into a relaxed state enabling direct access to your subconscious mind. This is where our instinctive behaviour patterns and natural reactions are formed. Using positive suggestion and imagery you'll be able to focus on the behaviours that you wish to change. Together we will look at:

Each session will focus on small steps towards positive change that you want to make (to your life, to achieve your specific goal or to help with your particular condition).


All Therapeutic Hypnotherapy sessions conclude with a lovely relaxation/ trance to close the session.

How to get the best from our sessions

Though there is nothing that clients need to do or prepare before their sessions, I really want everyone to get the very best from their time with me, so the following tips/ pointers are useful to share:

  • Give yourself permission to do nothing, stop, relax and focus on your goals – this is important time for yourself. 

  • Find a quiet place without distractions

  • I will stream relaxation music, so lie/ sit somewhere comfortable and peaceful (for trance)

  • Think about a space and time where you will be free from disturbance (either of the 2 legged, 4 legged or doorbell/ mobile phone variety)

There's no 'homework' set after the session.
