Sleep serves many vital functions, both physically and mentally. If you’re deprived of the sleep you need, your body may not have time to complete the phases of sleep needed for muscle repair, memory consolidation and release of hormones regulating growth and appetite. Not only do you wake up feeling tired, but you are also less prepared to concentrate, make decisions, or engage with the day ahead. Long term it can lead to burnout, and spiral into further mental health problems. We know that sleep is important, sometimes though, it isn’t as simple as getting to be earlier; problems sleeping can often deteriorate into a vicious cycle of worry, anxiety, insomnia and exhaustion. As we sleep, our body repairs and restores itself, good sleep is very important. At night, when we dream, the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase of sleep is vital for memory and learning, making sense of the day. The REM phase also replenishes helpful hormones including those which makes us feel good and give us a boost. Most adults over 18 need between 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Children and teenagers need even more. If you find you are sleeping less than 8 hours per night, then you are probably being deprived of the sleep you need to function at your best.
